Euro 2016: Best XI in group stage

Euro 2016 has been very popular although for wrong reasons. Since the start of the tournament, Euro went on with numerous controversies both on-field and off-field. the 15th edition of the tournament, however, saw some breath-taking matches as most of the group matches went down the wire and the group stage capped off with close encounters on the final match day. Here we look at the best XI of this Euro so far.

Goalkeeper

Michael McGovern is arguably having the time of his life during the ongoing Euros as he helped Northern Ireland to reach Round of 16 from a difficult group having stood ground against mighty Germany and an inspirational Poland despite losing both the matches, the team has lost only by tiny margins. McGovern has made 15 saves in 3 group matches which is by far ahead of any other goalkeeper till now in this Euro.

Defenders

Croatia’s captain Darjio Srna has been the inspiration for the team despite having a low time in his personal life, he has carried the nation with his determination and the team are now in Round of 16. He flew back how for his father’s funeral and came back to play all the three matches of Croatia.

Switzerland’s centre-back Fabian Schar has scored the winning goal in their opening match and have been rock solid at the back helping them to draw against hosts France.

Germany’s centre-back Jerome Boateng is just continuing his great form and proving doubters why he is the best around. Boateng has been the leader at the back for Germany in this Euro as he mesmerises people with his long passing as well.

Jonas Hector has been in a remarkable form as he rose rapidly over the past few years. Just like Jamie Vardy, Hector was playing in six-tier German football 8 years back and now he is one of the best left-backs in the tournament. He has definitely helped Germany’s problem of full-backs which is their only weakness.

Midfielders

Toni Kroos is arguably the best defensive midfielder in this Euro 2016 as he sprays passes with ease. The player who comes to the tournament on the back of Champions League success with Real Madrid has made as many as 111 passes in the game against Northern Ireland with a jaw-dropping 92% success rate.

Wales’ midfielder Aaron Ramsey is another star midfielder who has helped Wales in their rise at European level as he has a goal and assisted two more as Wales make it to the Round of 16.

France’s Dimitri Payet is having the season of his life, he has made a name for himself in Premier League and has carried the good work for the French national team. The player has scored twice in the three league matches and has helped the hosts reach knock-out rounds.

Forwards

Kevin de Bruyne is arguably the best playmaker in this Euro as Belgium were through to the knockouts after a win against Sweden. The player holds the key for Belgium as they face Hungary next on their road to glory.

Ivan Perisic is carrying the hopes of Croatia in the tournament as he has been the go-to man for the team. He has netted twice in the group stages as he helped Croatia seal a victory against defending champions Spain 2-1.

Gareth Bale  is undoubtedly the stand-out player in the Euro so far. He has been driving the attack for Wales almost single-handedly. The Real Madrid star forward has netted in each of the three games in the group stage as he helped Wales finish top of the group and two of his goals came from sensational free-kicks.
