Real Madrid are looking to extend Karim Benzema’s contract beyond its 2019 expiry date, Marca have reported.
After a period of uncertainty and links away from the club, the French striker has impressed manager Zinedine Zidane and president Florentino Perez recently and was instrumental in last weekend’s 2-1 win away at Athletic Bilbao.
Benzema has been a staple of Los Blancos’ attack since his arrival from Lyon in 2009 and is now Real Madrid’s eighth highest all-time goalscorer with 177 goals.
This season he has 14 goals in all competitions, helping his side establish a two-point lead over Barcelona in La Liga, with a game in hand.
Benzema is believed to be happy to stay at Real Madrid, while Zidane and president Perez are also reportedly keen to make sure he will extend his contract.
Benzema has been linked with moves away in the past, the likes of Arsenal in the Premier League often rumoured to be interested, but it seems likely that he will now see out the prime of his career with Real Madrid.
Now in his eighth season at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, Benzema is the club’s eighth highest goalscorer with 177 goals. Only Ronaldo has scored more goals than the Frenchman during his time at Real Madrid.
As vital as Ronaldo has been to Real’s destructive attack over the years, Benzema has proven he’s as salient. Together, the devastating strike partnership has terrorised defences for eight years.
Benzema isn’t your typical No. 9 that looks for goals first, he plays within the team, particularly, a Ronaldo led attack. Indeed the 32-year-old have “lost freshman and speed,” but he is still instrumental to Zinedine Zidane’s front line.
