Mourinho pulls off a HUGE Surprise – Senegal defender undergoing medical at Chelsea

Chelsea is on the verge of completing yet another deal for a defender. Reliable French media outlet 20 Minutes has confirmed the news that the defending Premier League Chelsea are signing FC Nantes’ 27-year-old defender Papy Djilobodji. The defender his having his medical at the club.

According to media reports, 27-year-old Papy Djilobodji is currently undergoing his medical at Chelsea. Several other European clubs like Trabzonspor and Celtic were keen on signing the 6″4 central defender. The defender has earned 2 caps for the Senegalese national team since joining French club Nantes in 2010.

According to French Football journalist Francois Piraux, Chelsea has apparently agreed to pay a transfer fee somewhere around €3.5m.

Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea have endured a shocking start to the season and incredibly have the second worst defensive record in the league. They have just four points from 4 games so far and does not even feature in the top half of the league. With question marks over the ageing John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, Mourinho is clearly looking to bolster the Blues back line and is set to do so with a low profile centre-half. Chelsea has already signed Abdul Baba Rahman from Augsburg a week back.

Chelsea had initially targetted Everton defender John Stones, but as the club refused to sell the Blues, Mourinho is eyeing a cheaper alternative.

Papy Djilobodji began his career with Senegalese ASC Saloum and earned his first professional caps during the 2007/2008 season. After two successful seasons for ASC Saloum in the Senegal Premier League, he was transferred in October 2009 to France based clubUS Sénart-Moissy. He played a good first half of the 2009/2010 season for US Sénart-Moissy and on 27 December 2009 sold to FC Nantes.

It is definitely a shock move from Chelsea’s part who were expected to make bigger additions after a poor start. The move could prove dicey as the defender is not even a youngster. It will be interesting to see if Djilobodji could replace either of John Terry or Gary Cahill.
