On-loan Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli yet again has been dealt a major injury blow, sidelined for at least 3 months with hernia problems, reports Football Italia.
The Italian, who is currently on loan at Serie A side AC Milan from Liverpool, till now has only three competitive appearances because of a lingering groin problem.
And now, reports from Italy are suggesting that a Danish specialist doctor Per Holmich has detected a hernia which needs immediate surgery. That means Balotelli will be sidelined for atleast three months.
It’s a huge blow for the 25-year-old controversial striker who had been looking to force his way into the national squad for next summer’s European Championships.
However, the injury will surely jeopardise Liverpool’s plan to offload Balotelli on a permanent basis.
Milan also has no plan to sign the striker when his loan deal ends, while Liverpool are still paying a significant portion of his wage this season.
The 25-year-old striker had most successful stint of his career with Milan between 2013 and 2014, but the club at the end decided he was rather expendable and let him leave for Anfield.
Balotelli spent a frustrating single season on Merseyside, scoring just four goals in 28 matches after his £16m move from Milan.
Following that failed stint, his return Milan was marked as “make or break” for him. But it wasn’t the first time the Italy international had to face this situation of course, but it looked to get a reaction out of Balotelli finally.
Throughout his entire career, the 25-year-old faced severe criticism for being selfish. The player who had so much potentiality to go the entire top unfortunately suffered from lack of energy and motivation. Football world started to believe Balotelli will never fulfil his potential.
But his mentality somehow changed in his second spell at San Siro. His performance in the final third has made a great difference, while he worked hard to become an effective part of Milan coach Mihajlovic’s strategy, making it clear he is eager to put the effort in.
Also he has shown great signs of maturity. Earlier Balotelli was provoked on so many occasions in the four matches he featured for Milan, but surprisingly there was no such reaction. The so called high-tempered striker proved that, he may have grown up finally.
So, after overcoming those hurdles, it’s a mighty blow for the promising Italian marksman who recently showed the negative aspects of his character are long gone.
