Argentina coach Edgardo Bauza has said that his team are not dependent on Lionel Messi and that they will improve as a team with time.
The Barcelona man’s penalty helped give La Albiceleste a 1-0 win over Chile in a crucial 2018 World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires.
The win also helped them get some revenge on Chile, who had defeated them in the finals of the previous two Copa America editions.
Messi’s goal was his 58th international goal and helped his country move to third in the qualification group, eight points behind Brazil.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Bauza said, as per Fourfourtwo, “I do not think the team is Messi-dependent. I think he played a good game. Time to work, we will improve.”
He added, “I’m very happy because we won a game that came out as we imagined it. For me, the team played a great game that contained a great team like Chile. We failed to recover the ball. We could not have it in the last 15 minutes. We won against a great rival.”
Before concluding his press conference, he reiterated, “For me, we did not play a bad game.”
Argentina took the lead through Lionel Messi in the 16th minute after a penalty was awarded when Angel Di Maria was fouled inside the box.
The Chileans then had a goal rightly ruled out for offside, before Nicolas Otamendi missed an easy chance to double the lead. Alexis Sanchez almost leveled matters but saw his shot ricochet off the crossbar.
