Arsene Wenger has not had the best starts to a new Premier League campaign as his side, which was weakened by injuries, was beaten by Liverpool on the opening days of the new campaign.
If the result in itself was a bummer, Arsenal also had to see Aaron Ramsey added to a list of players who are currently unavailable for the manager for selection.
This has seen Wenger dive into the transfer market for additions in attack and also in defense and one of the top transfer targets for the club for over a week now is Valencia’s German defender Shkodran Mustafi.
The 24-year old has been in great form for club and country as he helped Germany to the semi-final of the EUROs with commanding performances at the back for the World Cup winners.
However, with Arsene Wenger desperate for a defensive addition after the injuries to his players, Mustafi seemed to have agreed upon a move to the Emirates this summer.
It is revealed that Valencia are holding out for a fee close to £30m but Wenger, who is not ready to pay the price for the defender wants a move for around the £20m mark.
The player and the English outfit have already agreed on a deal for the move but it is understood that Valencia will not be letting the player go if their asking price is not met.
This has seen Arsene Wenger cool off interest for the German with reports suggesting Liverpool and Chelsea are also scouting him.
But it is now understood that Arsenal might be able to get their man this summer after the La Liga outfit’s president revealed that they need the money this summer.
Recent reports revealed that the Spanish outfit are ready to sell players for cash to balance their books and Mustafi, who has been on the radar for some time now, may be the first player to be shown the exit door in the coming days.
Valencia chief Garcia Pitarch said: “We’re above the FFP guidelines, that’s the reality, and as of today, the four players we’ve signed cannot be registered, meaning we need to reduce the cost in a significant manner to register the players and sign a centre-back, which is a priority in case one of the ones at our club leaves.”
This comes as a boost for the Gunners who may now be able to sign the 24-year old if they are ready to splash the cash may be just in excess of the £20m they were ready to pay.
Do you think Arsenal should pay £30m for Mustafi this summer?
