Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United lifted the League Cup last weekend, their first major trophy under Jose Mourinho in his first year in charge at the club.
However, they failed to back it up with a decent performance in the domestic league as they managed to take just a point from their game against AFC Bournemouth at home this weekend.
The Red Devils are still reeling on the 6th place in the points table and though they have an extra game in hand over their opponents, they will have to be consistent to get into the top-4 come the end of the season.
The manager has already been looking to get some star players to the club for the next season but he is also having an eye on players currently in the squad.
Mourinho is set to let a number of under-performing players leave the club in the summer but he is adamant in trying to keep a couple of players at the club this summer.
One such player who might now extend his stay at the club is Spanish playmaker Juan Mata.
The former Chelsea man who was thrown out of the Stamford Bridge by Mourinho himself had not really used him extensively at the start of the season but as the season progressed, Mourinho understood the importance of the player and is now integral to his plans at the club.
Mata moved to the Old Trafford back in 2014 and his current deal expires in 2018. It means that he has less than 18 months left on his contract and if United do not extend it, they might have to sell him on a free next summer.
However, that will not be the case as various reports from papers all across the country now claim that Juan Mata is set to extend his stay at the club.
The Spaniard’s contract has a clause that allows him to extend his contract for a year after 2018 and having assumed first team responsibilities finally under Mourinho, Mata is now set to trigger that clause to extend his time at the Old Trafford.
With 9 goals in all competitions this season, Mata is United’s second highest goal scorer after Zlatan Ibrahimovic this season for Manchester United and Mourinho will hope that he can help the side, not just this season but also the next.
This news will come as a boost for Manchester United who are looking to extend the contracts of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Michael Carrick both of whom are yet to put pen to paper.
Do you think Juan Mata has a place at the Old Trafford next season?
