According to Spanish outlet Plaza Deportiva, Arsenal have been joined by AC Milan as the clubs rival to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The Gunners are keen to add a central defender going into the new season due to Per Mertesacker’s injury which ruled him out for the rest of the year.

The 25-year old German international Mustafi has been under the radar of Arsenal for some time now as the Gunners need defensive cover. But Italian giants AC Milan have rejoined the race to sign the talented defender.

AC Milan were initially thought to sign Villareal defender Mateo Mussachio as they were close to finishing the deal. But with the Spanish side unwilling to sell their Argentine ace Milan has to rethink their transfer strategy under new manager Vincenzo Montella.

The German defender had a release clause of over £45m on his current contract with Valencia but the club are willing to sell him for as less as £25m in a cut-price deal as they need to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Arsenal are yet to make a formal offer for the defender despite all the speculations and rumors going around but with AC Milan’s renewed interest, the Gunners might be forced to make an offer at the earliest.
