Though much of the talk amongst Arsenal fans is naturally centred around the upcoming Champions League tie tonight, the news that sam Allardyce has left his role as England manager has shocked all.
Just 67 days into his reign, Big Sam has resigned from his post, leaving the Three Lions in a state of disarray once more.
Now, according to the Daily Telegraph, the Gunners could feel the effects of the latest managerial scandal.
They claim Wembley chiefs are preparing to make a move for Arsene Wenger at the end of the season, upon the expiration of his contract in North London.
Celebrating 20 years in charge of the Premier League giants, the 66-year-old Frenchman is believed to be a top target of the FA.
Stan Kroenke, who owns the club, is understood to have begun negotiations to extend Le Prof’s stay at the club and will reportedly battle the FA over his services.
With Wenger reportedly considering his options after the end of the current season, Arsenal will be required to shed light on his future. The Times reported in May that a two-year extension had been offered to the 66-year-old however an angry rejection from Wenger leaves uncertainty over his position heading into the new campaign.
Wenger was widely reported to be the number one choice for the job during the summer following the resignation of Roy Hodgson post-Euro 2016. However, with the veteran Frenchman choosing to remain with the Gunners, the FA surprised everyone with the announcement that the then Sunderland boss, Sam Allardyce, was to take charge.
While the bosses at Wembley seek to unpick a 20-year relationship between Wenger and Arsenal, Gareth Southgate will continue in the capacity of ‘caretaker’ boss.
With England set to face Malta on October 8th as part of their World Cup qualification bid, this latest managerial crisis for the national side is the last thing they need.
Following a dismal showing at the European Championships during the summer, fans will want to see the ‘Three Lions’ roaring back to their best.
Managerial uncertainty was not part of the plan.
