Jose Mourinho had earlier mentioned that there will be four primary signings at Manchester United. Having already secured Bailly, Mkhitaryan, Ibrahimovic and with Paul Pogba deal done, it was quite surprising that Daily Star had linked Jose Fonte from Southampton with a move to Manchester United.
Now a report from the same source has suggested that the club has been dealt a blow in their pursuit of the player. Given that Fonte is already 32-years old and there are plenty young defenders available, the media probably linked him with a move only because the player himself is Portuguese.
Anyway, Claude Puel, the new manager at Southampton has said that Fonte remains an integral part of the team and is not willing to part with him easily.
When asked whether Fonte would stay, he told Sky Sports: “Yes. He is a very important player for the squad and the team.
“It’s fantastic to have two players that are champions of Europe, with Soares. Only we can say that. Jose came back with the squad and it’s important to keep him with a good head and attitude.”
Fonte who was also linked with a move to Everton has made 267 appearances for Southampton since making his debut for the Saints back in 2010. the experienced centre-back, who showed some impressive performances as Portugal were crowned Euro 2016 champions this summer.
United may be in the market for a few players as there are speculations that several current first team squad could be leaving. However the report of United’s interest in Jose Fonte seems a little far-fetched, but if it’s true then Mourinho must be furious now!
However, Zenit Saint Petersburg star Ezequiel Garay and Juventus stalwart Leonardo Bonucci are also being eyed by the United manager.
