Manchester United defender Guillermo Varela who is currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt has injured his ankle ligaments as he is set for a long lay-off.
The 23-year old Uruguayan is sent out on loan by new manager Jose Mourinho as he is keen on the player’s progress away from Old Trafford. However, Varela’s development has taken a hit with the injury that he suffered against Darmstadt in their 1-0 loss on Saturday.
The young defender has to be substituted after just seven minutes into the game as Varela collided with striker Sven Schipplock. He is ruled out for the rest of the year and could only be available during the second half of the season.
The defender who plays as a right-back was signed by Frankfurt in early July on a season-long loan deal as he is currently below Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian in the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Reports in Germany suggest that the player is set to undergo a surgery on Tuesday before being sidelined completely for at least three to four months. Frankfurt coach Niko Kovac has confirmed the injury news after the game as the defender is set to have a lengthy spell away from the game.
“I immediately had a bad feeling. It was a very unnecessary tackle,” Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic told kicker.
The defender now joins the injury list at Frankfurt with Bamba Anderson and Marco Russ who were also sidelined due to injuries.
The player has contracted with Red Devils till 2017 after signing from Penarol in 2013 and has made 11 appearances for Manchester United in the last three seasons across all competitions. He also had a loan spell at Real Madrid Castilla in the 2014-15 season.
However, the injury meant he might not get enough playing time for the current season which would hamper his chances of breaking into the first team at Manchester United next season.
