Fiorentina defender Marcos Alonso is expected to sign for Chelsea in the next 24 hours as the player have agreed personal terms with the Blues, according to reports.
The Spaniard jetted into London for a medical to finalize the deal. The Blues are keen to sign a defender this summer as the new manager Antonio Conte is keen to shuffle his defense a bit going into the season.
Chelsea have sent Abdul Baba Rahman on loan to Schalke earlier this summer and are looking to sign a left-back before the close of the transfer window.
Marcos Alonso has emerged as the top target for the position and Chelsea are now on the verge of finishing the move. The 25-year old have already had two different spells in Premier League at Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland before moving to Fiorentina where he enjoyed his finest campaign last season.
He is one of the top defenders available in the market as clubs outside England are keen to keep hold of their star players with the financial status of English clubs this summer due to their new TV rights deal.
Alonso came through Real Madrid’s academy and Chelsea had a £20million bid rejected for the defender earlier this week. According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have reported agreed for a £24million fee and the club has given permission to Alonso to have a medical in London before finalizing the deal.
The arrival of Alonso would help Conte to reshuffle his defense as he could bring Cesar Azpilicueta to right wing and Branislav Ivanoic to central defense which could prove crucial to the Blues as they go further into the season.
