Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged the club to sign Southampton’s central defender Virgil van Dijk.
The 36-year old, who has recently announced retirement as a player, will take over as an academy coach in February and he believes that the Dutch defender could be right solution for the Reds’ defensive woes.
Liverpool have lost their ground in the title race after suffering a shock 3-2 defeat to Swansea City last weekend as they fell below to fourth position. The Reds have leaked goals at the back as they have conceded 27 goals in the Premier League alone so far this season in 22 games.
The Dutch international has grown into one of the finest in Premier League this season and have drawn interest from all the major clubs in England. The 25-year old has been solid so far and has impressed heavily in the first leg of EFL Cup semi final against Liverpool. Steven Gerrard believes he could the right solution for the Reds’ defense.
“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton.
“But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
Meanwhile, Southampton has a subject of concern as van Dijk was subbed off early in their 3-0 win against Leicester City in the weekend and the defender might not have the chance to feature in the second leg against Liverpool at Anfield in the EFL Cup semi-final.
“He could not continue the game,” Saints boss Claude Puel said. “We will see for the next games. I don’t know if we can recover him.
“He took a big kick and we will see if we can recover him for this game. We will see in the morning [Monday].
“I hope we can have Virgil of course because he is our captain and he’s an important player.
“Of course, it will be better to recover Virgil for this game.”
