Wayne Rooney has given Manchester United a he morale boost after the 28 year old trained with team mates ahead of the second leg clash against Bayern Munich in the quarter finals of the Champions League at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
There were injury concerns after the striker picked up a toe injury in the first leg and missed United’s away travel to Newcastle but Rooney is well on course and subject to a late fitness test, the striker will lead the line against the Bavarians in Munich.
Bayern manager Pep Guardiola feels it will be the ultimate test of his side’s character and feels Rooney should start in the mouthwatering prospect. The former Barcelona manager said, “I am more than willing to put a glass of beer on Wayne starting the match 100%. He is one of the best players I have seen and a game of this magnitude doesn’t come every time in a year.”
Bayern hold the advantage taking the pitch thanks to the away goal they scored at Old Trafford. Nemanja Vidic had given United the lead with a fantastic looping header from Rooney’s corner but Bastian Schweinsteiger restored parity eight minutes later with a wonderful first touch finish from Mario Mandzukic’s rollback cushioned header into the path of the German.
Schweinsteiger will miss the clash though have picked up a second yellow in the dying stages of the encounter for a foul on Rooney as replays showed it was perhaps a harsh decision gone against the German midfielder. Javi Martinez also misses out through suspension while centre back Dante returns after a one match ban.
For the Red Devils, Patrice Evra is back after serving his suspension and will be in line for the left back spot while right back Rafael is also available for selection. Moyes however must decide what would be his strongest side o face the Germans, whether to opt the brilliant Darren Fletcher, the Scot who was really sumptuous in the weekend against Newcastle, or play Belgian Marounne Fellaini in the middle. Shinji Kagawa must start too given his run of form while Rooney as we said, and Welbeck should lead the line.
Predictions: Bayern Munich 2-1 Manchester United
Bayern are well placed to go through, courtesy the away goal they scored at Old Trafford but the Red Devils will not go down without a fight.
