Newcastle United are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Chelsea to sign Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu on loan.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Blues from FC Porto in 2013, has spent the last three seasons away from Stamford Bridge.

He initially was loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem, before joining Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga.

His most prolific spell remains with Dutch top-flight club Vitesse, where he spent 2013/14, scoring five goals across 30 matches in all competitions, whilst creating a further six.

Last season, his time was shared between Bournemouth, where he only made two appearances, and Malaga. At the Spanish club, he played in a more fruitful 24 games, whilst managing four goals.

Malaga finished eighth in La Liga last season, just missing out on Europa League football.

According to ESPN, he is now closing in on a move to Newcastle for the coming season, and the move should become permanent if the Magpies are promoted.

Newcastle suffered their second relegation to English football’s second tier in eight seasons.

The Magpies have tentatively begun their quest to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking, under Rafa Benitez.

An opening day loss at Fulham was followed by a defeat at home to Huddersfield Town.

However, they’ve managed to pull themselves together with back-to-back wins over Reading, Bristol City and Brighton & Hove Albion. At this early stage, it leaves them four points behind the leaders.
