Recently captured Mexican Drug Kingpin Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman was once interested to buy Chelsea.

Notorious drug lord El Chapo apparently didn’t fulfil all of his goals before he was recaptured few days ago. According to a report from Diario Sport, He was interested to spend some of his illegal wealth purchasing English Premier League’s Chelsea Football Club, Mexican authorities also confirmed the news.

El Chapo was “seriously looking into purchasing” the Blues, law enforcement sources revealed. With an estimated wealth close to £700m, he had the money to go for the deal because Chelsea are said to have a market value of £600m. Guzman was allegedly trying to merge his two major interests – football and as per the Mexican press “entrepreneurship”. The drug baron is also a big supporter of Mexican club Puebla FC.

But Guzman couldn’t have passed the British football leagues’ tough “fit and proper person” test that potential buyers of football clubs in EPL have to undergo. Premier League instituted the rule in 2009 to protect English club’s unscrupulous owners. Roman Abramovich is also not in a mood to sell Chelsea.

Forbes’ 2015 soccer valuations suggest Chelsea are at No. 6 position among all the football clubs worldwide with an estimated team value of just under £98m. Among Premier League sides, Chelsea are ranked third close behind Manchester United and Manchester City.

The Mexican Drug lord was arrested on 8th January just months after he gave an exclusive interview to actor Sean Penn which was published in Rolling Stone magazine. Mexican Authorities now say that the interview actually helped them to find out El Chapo’s hideout.

Guzman’s lawyer has said during Sean Penn’s interview, El Chapo was labelled the biggest supplier in the world of heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine but it was full of “stupidities.”
