Chelsea just an year after winning the Premier League title find themselves in a re-building state and with a new manager to come into the club next season, the summer is going to be very important for the franchise.
The biggest loss for Chelsea this season will be John Terry who announced that he will not extend a contract with the club next season. This has left the club without a first choice center back for the next season.
So Chelsea are in the market for a strong central defender this summer and how they would have loved to have completed the transfer of John Stones last summer.
Everton defender John Stones has been on the radar of a number of top clubs including Barcelona but Chelsea just missed out on the player in the last summer when they were keen to bring him in to the club for this season.
However, the valuation and the players desire not to move have seen Stones play for Everton this season. But might not be possible for the Merseyside outfit to keep hold of the player for a longer time.
With Pep Guardiola at Manchester City also planning an overhaul, Stones may have just found his next home.
Chelsea bid £38m for Stones last summer but City now look favorites to sign the England defender when Guardiola takes over as manager in June.
This has left the Blues without too many world class options but they will have to continue their summer recruitment even as talks with their new manager are still in progress.
Italy national team manager Antonio Conte is understood to be in advanced talks with the English club but it also reported that Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is the front runner for the job if he is ready to leave Spain.
The success the latter has got in Spain might make him a far-fetched target which leaves Chelsea with Conte to lead the club next season.
The Italian has already expressed his wishes and would push for signing Paris St Germain striker Edinson Cavani and also wants Italian defenders Giorgio Chiellini, 31, and Leonardo Bonucci, 28, their ages and contractual situations at Juve – they have deals to 2018 and 2020 respectively – make those two defenders difficult targets.
This has seen Chelsea scout for Scott Dann this summer.
The 29-year old signed a new 5 year contract with Crystal Palace last season a contract which will see the player priced at 20 million euros. But at 29 years of age and no re-sale value, the price is expected to come down if Chelsea really want their man.
Chelsea have lost Kurt Zouma to an ACL injury for the rest of the season and are presently without a first choice center back till John Terry is back to full fitness.
Do you think Scott Dann is good enough to play for Chelsea?
