Chelsea manager Antonio Conte have been looking for defensive targets all summer as he failed to land his desired defensive players. However, the Blues managed to sign David Luiz from Paris Saint-Germain and Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina on the deadline day in an attempt to strengthen their back-line.
Reports suggest that neither of the players were original defensive targets for Conte but they were signed as Blues were desperate for defenders as Conte is known for making great defensive unit at his clubs.
David Luiz’s agent Kia Joorabchian has confirmed that the 29-year old David Luiz really wanted to get back to Stamford Bridge as he pushed through the deal when the offer came his way. Eventually, Chelsea managed to pull off the deal in the closing moments of deadline day which came as a huge surprise for everyone as it was a sudden development altogether.
“It came around quite late in the day, it was a late deal, but it wasn’t that late,” Joorabchian told Goal.com.
“It was in the last few days of the window, but I think that before that it was very much on the cards.
“The move was David’s doing because I don’t think that PSG wanted to sell David, but he wanted to come to Chelsea, for sure. When Chelsea made a move for him, it was the end of the story.”
“He is back at Stamford Bridge, but before that he expected to work at PSG until that connection happened.”
The Blues defense has looked horrid in the recent games but Conte is set to give a major role for Luiz this season as the Brazilian could really make the difference for the club in the upcoming fixtures.
“I think David is one of the top defenders in the world, there’s no question,” he added.
“I think about his ability and his situation and Chelsea were looking for someone of his nature and David was obviously very, very keen to come back to Chelsea.”
