Chelsea striker Diego Costa has revealed that he was very close to joining Atletico Madrid this summer and only a few details has stopped him from joining his former employers.

The Spanish club have tried to sign the striker very hard but the Blues resistance has ultimately paid off as they managed to keep Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge for the rest of the season.

The player have already proved crucial to new manager Antonio Conte as he has helped Blues in their first three games in Premier League. Chelsea have managed full nine points in the first three games and have looked impressive under new manager.

“I wished I could go back to Atletico, I’m not going to lie,” he said speaking to Spanish television channel Movistar Plus.

“Everyone knows what happened to me there [England], with the language, the weather and everything. But I can’t complain because I’m a boy whom the fans love, at Chelsea they respect me.

“I had the chance to go back but I couldn’t, because of a few details. I’m grateful to the people at Atletico, to Cholo [Simeone] especially, who has always put his confidence in me.

“Now I am at Chelsea, I’m doing well, the league has started and I’m focused on that. Things are how they are. I hope that Atletico do very well, like last season but this time win titles. I want the best for them, I always feel for them, but I have to do my work at Chelsea.”

Diego Costa was an instant hit at Atletico as he scored a massive 56 goals in his two seasons at Atletico Madrid before moving to Chelsea and helping them win a league title in his debut season.
