Chelsea vs Arsenal: 5 Memorable London Derbies

One of the fiercest derbies in world football between teams from the capital city of England, Chelsea and Arsenal has always been a grueling encounter. Both teams usually fight at the top of the table and the games are often full of excitement. Over the years, both squads boast of some incredible players and when they face each other, they are bound to produce some close games. 

Here is a list of 5 matches between Chelsea and Arsenal that have shown why Football is such a beautiful game –

Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal (2011-12)

Andre Villas-Boas was the manager at the Stamford Bridge as they welcomed Arsenal for the first leg in October of 2011. Robin Van Persie had a 30 goal season and was at his best in this season. Frank Lampard and John Terry were on target for the Blues but the Gunners came back twice from behind as Theo Walcott scored the equalizer before half time.

After the break Mata gave Chelsea the lead but Robin Van Persie who was in great form scored two more goals and gave Arsenal all three points. Van Persie scored a hatrick on the day and Arsenal went on to finish 3rd in the season.

Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea (2003-04)

The 2003-2004 Champions League saw two Premier League Clubs face each other in the quarter-finals. With just minutes to go for the end of normal time in the second leg at the Emirates, the two clubs were tied on aggregate at 2-2 and the game was close to extra time. However, Wayne Bridge of Chelsea produced a brilliant run into the box and found the top corner and gave Chelsea the lead. 

With not much time left on the clock, Chelsea won the game 2-1 and entered the semi final where they were beaten by AS Monaco. This is however one of the most memorable matches for the Stamford Bridge Club.

 

Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal (1999-00)

This game in the month of October in 1999, saw Chelsea lose the game from a very comfortable position. Tore Andre Flo and Petrescu scored on either side of the break to give Chelsea a two goal advantage. Nwankwo Kanu the Nigerian had other ideas as he blasted a 15-minute hatrick and the Stamford Bridge to not only win the game but silence the crowd.

Kanu scored a screamer into the top corner in extra time from an acute angle. That moment will stay in the memory of every Arsenal fan for years to come.

Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal (1997-98)

Arsenal took on Chelsea in an early game in the Premier League in the September of 1997. Gus Poyet gave Chelsea the lead in the first half but Dennis Bergkamp scored a brace to put Arsenal in front. Gianfranco Zola pulled one back for the Blues and the game looked like it was heading for a draw at 2-2. Winterburn who was known for scoring goals produced a scorcher as he found the right top corner of the net from 30 yards out.

This 88th minute strike gave Arsenal a memorable victory over their bitter rivals from across the city.

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal (1990-91)

The biggest achievement for the Gunners was the ‘Unbeateables’ tag they got in the 2004 season. But in 1990-91, Arsenal came close to the feat but this game against Chelsea spoiled the party. Chelsea dictated the game for most of the time as wing back Winterburn had a horrid time. He left Arsenal high and dry as Chelsea made merry down his flank.

Kerry Dixon and Graham Stuart scored goals that were gifted to them by Winterburn. Alan Smith pulled one back for the visitors but Chelsea were successful in inflicting Arsenal’s first and only loss that season.
