Confirmed: Former Arsenal striker all set to make shocking Champions League return

Emmanuel Adebayor is set to make a shocking Champions League return by joining Lyon, reports in France suggest.

The former Arsenal, Tottenham, Real Madrid and Manchester City striker is without a club after leaving Crystal Palace this summer.

The 32-year-old has spent time in Ligue 1 in the past with Metz and Monaco, before joining Arsene Wenger’s side in 2006.

And he is set to join Lyon to bolster their attacking options in Europe’s premier competition, according to L’Equipe.

The 32-year-old’s ability is unquestionable, though his attitude has repeatedly been called into question – another issue which will deter a number of managers.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas said after the club’s 3-0 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb that the club are trying to become stronger offensively and it’s believed that the signing of Adebayor could add to their firepower.

However, goals from Maxwell Cornet, Corentin Tolisso and Jordan Ferri showed Lyon can hold their own in the Champions League and they now top Group H following a draw between Juventus and Sevilla.

Recently Adebayor admitted that he may have made a mistake by forcing his way out of Arsena .

Adebayor cemented his place as a villain in the eyes of Arsenal fans with an extraordinary celebration when he scored against his old club in his first game against them in September 2009.

He also stamped on former Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie’s face in the same game and was hit with a three-game ban and was involved in run-ins with Alex Song and Cesc Fabregas.

Adebayor said: “For me, at the end of the day I have to be happy about where I came from and what I have become today – I have to forget about all the haters.

“All the Arsenal fans boo me and when I look back I understand where everything went wrong but there are certain things in life you cannot come back to any more, you just look at it and say ‘okay I made a mistake’.

“We all do things at some stage of our lives that we are not supposed to do but the most important thing is to keep moving.
