According to ESPN FC, Manchester United have begun informal talks with Southampton over a potential deal for defender Jose Fonte.
The report also suggests that an official bid could be placed next week by the Red Devils as Jose Mourinho is keen to make one more signing before the end of the current transfer window.
The 32-year old has emerged as a cheap and realistic target for Jose Mourinho as the new manager is keen to sign an experienced defender. The Red Devils’ have been linked with the likes of Leonardo Bonucci, Raphael Varane earlier but Fonte looks best option available for the club.
The defender, who have featured in Euro final for Portugal after helping them win their first major trophy, is one of the best central defenders available in the market.
The player has not started in Southampton’s season opener amid speculations of him leaving the club despite new coach Claude Puel keen to keep hold of his defender.
Fonte have earlier said: “If the interest is there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United.
“But I have a contract with Southampton, and I’m just focused on my work, to make a great season. I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United’s player is a big difference.”
Jose Mourinho is keen to have an experienced defender who could be a leader in the defense like Nemanja Matic under Sir Alex Ferguson.
The transfer fee was expected to be around £8m and United are expected to meet the price after the heavy spending they did this summer.
