Antonio Conte dropped a couple of points for the first time after taking charge of the Stamford Bridge outfit earlier this season. The former Italian boss made a sizzling start to his career in the Premier League but stumbled into Francesco Guidolin’s side at the Liberty stadium this weekend.
Conte needed a brace from star player Diego Costa to take a point from the game as the Swans looked like taking all three for a long time in the game.
This game once again showed the defensive frailties in Chelsea’s squad which were evident even in the first three games where Chelsea managed to find winners right at the end.
It was also clear that Conte is not happy with his defense even after adding the likes of David Luiz and Marcos Alonso for a combined fee of more than £50m on deadline day. That has seen the manager scout for potential additions to his squad even after the end of the transfer window.
And recent reports have revealed that Chelsea have their eyes set on star Premier League defender to add to his squad next summer.
Manchester United’s Italian full-back Matteo Darmian is reportedly at the top of the wish list for the former Italian boss who is set to lose Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry at the end of the current season.
Both players who are over 30 years old do not have too many years to serve the club and will leave Conte with a huge job of finding at least a couple of defenders next season.
And it is understood that United’s Darmian might be one of those come the end of the season.
The 26-year old had a decent start at Old Trafford to his career but injuries late in the season under Louis van Gaal saw him lose his place last season.
He was, for some strange reason, ignored by Mourinho right from the time he took over the club and asked the 26-year old to find another club in the recent transfer window.
However, Darmian was not able to agree on terms with any club and is still a part of the Manchester United squad this season. But Mourinho is not impressed with him and still wants to offload him even as early as January and it looks like his former club might be the next destination for the Italian defender.
Conte is reportedly interested in Martin Caceres from Juventus but will pounce on Darmian if he is available. However, he will have to fend off interests from the likes of Juventus and Napoli for Darmian who is still a couple of years away from his peak.
Conte has already worked with the 26-year in his time in Italy and will know everything about him and what he can add to Chelsea’s squad next season. The lack of defenders in the Chelsea squad will see Conte make a valiant effort to sign Darmian but it is to be seen if Mourinho is comfortable selling a star player to a direct competitor in the domestic league.
Do you think Matteo Darmian will make a move to Chelsea this January?
