Copa America 2015
Quarterfinal 2 (June 25, 2015)
Estadio Municipal Germán Becker, Temuco, Chile
Paolo Guerrero demolished Bolivia with his hat trick after shooting blanks in his previous three matches for Peru. His performance on Thursday evening reminded us of Copa America 2011, where he finished top scorer with 5 goals, ahead of Luis Suárez and Sergio Agüero.
Peru coach Ricardo Gareca brought in Jefferson Farfán to the line-up, clearly with an attacking intent, while Bolivia started with five defenders and a lone striker in veteran Marcelo Moreno. Straight from the opening whistle, Peru broke forward, with Luis Advíncula sprinting into the right-hand side of the penalty area and earned his team a corner. Cristian Cueva earned Peru a free-kick in a dangerous position, and Farfán stepped up to take it. His shot was on-target but it was too close to Bolivian keeper Quiñónez to cause any trouble.
A few minutes later, Quiñónez almost embarrassed himself as he fumbled when Paolo Guerrero challenged him for the ball. The referee decided that the striker’s attempted tackle was too heavy and awarded a free kick to Bolivia. Shortly, Guerrero answered with his opening goal as he headed in Juan Vargas’ excellent cross from the left flank when he was left unmarked. He followed it up with another goal within 3 minutes from a Peruvian counter-attack. Yellow cards were shown to Peru’s Advíncula and Bolivia’s Danny Bejarano, as the remainder of the 1st half was played out.
The 2nd half provided no respite for Bolivia, despite bringing on two more forwards in lieu of both full-backs Hurtado and Morales. Guerrero completed his hat trick with 17 minutes remaining, as he intercepted Ronald Raldes’ poor pass in Bolivia’s defensive half, and coolly slotted it past Quiñónez into the bottom right corner. Marcelo Moreno got a consolation goal for Bolivia, as he scored a late goal from the penalty spot.
Peru will now face hosts Chile in the first semifinal on June 30. The next quarterfinal is a mouth-watering clash between Argentina and Colombia, where hopefully we will get to see Shakira cheering her national team on.
