Couple of 9s! Liverpool Player Ratings In 2-0 Victory Over Tottenham Hotspur On The Weekend

An emphatic night at Anfield saw Liverpool lift their New Year curse as they finally managed to pick all three points from a game in the Premier League. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were awe-stuck in the first 20 minutes of the game as the Reds never gave them a chance to settle. Senegalese winger Sadio Mane started his first game in the league this year and he was all over the Spurs full-back Ben Davies, creating a few chances before scoring twice in the space of three frantic minutes at the Anfield Road end. The Spurs never looked like coming back as Liverpool piled on the chances and though they failed to convert from any of them, Liverpool managed to hold on to their clean sheet to move into the 5th place, taking over Manchester United. Here are the player ratings for the Reds for this game:

Simon Mignolet (7):

Made a superb save at 2-0 down to keep the two-goal cushion and also dominated his penalty area to keep his first clean sheet of the year.

Nathaniel Clyne (7):

A constant outlet on the right all night long, Clyne, did well to keep the Spurs away from the goal while also chipping in by putting in a couple of decent crosses on a productive night.

Joel Matip (7):

Barring one nervous moment, Matip, was immense all throughout the game as he never gave Harry Kane or Dele Alli any time on the ball in dangerous areas.

Lucas Leiva (7):

Stuck to his task of thumping the ball ahead in danger areas, Lucas, put in a super shift at the back for the Reds, before picking up an unfortunate injury late in the game.

James Milner (6):

Stuck to his task well on the flank as he showed great commitment right until the end to give Liverpool their first victory in February.

Jordan Henderson (7):

The skipper put on a commendable shift in the center of the park keeping Dembele, Wanyama, Alli and Son close to him all night, helping his side to a comfortable victory at the end.

Georginio Wijnaldum (9):

The Dutch international was on a role all night as he bossed the mid-field for his side, with some marvelous touches in congested areas to keep the Spurs honest. Also, provided the ball for Mane’s first goal, that broke the deadlock.

Adam Lallana (8):

Chasing the ball for 60 yards to win the ball back in the 80th minute of the game, the ever energetic Adam Lallana, was everywhere on the field for the Reds in this game.

Philippe Coutinho (7):

Did nothing fancy as he kept the pressure on the Spurs. Came close to scoring and does not look too far away from getting back to his best.

Roberto Firmino (8):

Another player who was at his best on the night, Firmino, had some great touches in the final third and was involved in both of Mane’s goals on a productive night.

Sadio Mane (9):

The Man of the Match on the night, Mane, showed what Liverpool were missing as his pace created havoc among the Spurs defense. He managed to get a brace but could gave got a lot more if not for some brave defending and some ordinary finishing.

SUBS:

Emre Can (6):

Came into the game with quarter of an hour to play and helped Liverpool win the ball back a number of times in a decent outing.

Ragnar Klavan (6):

Replaced the injured Lucas late in the game and did well to see off the game and hold on to a clean sheet.

Trent Alexander Arnold (6):

Got a few Premier League minutes under his belt.
