The English Premier League is host to an array of star players who have the ability to light up the field whenever their team needs them to. The league is known for its attacking end to end play and for the number of goals the games produce every week. The number of star strikers who have made a mark in the Premier League is very high. There are a number of superb players who can score goals at will and can lead the line for their respective clubs.
In this article, we will take a look at two tall, strong strikers, who have had a very much contrasting season so far in the league. Diego Costa moved to Chelsea in the summer transfer window in 2014. He was a star player for the club in the title winning season for Jose Mourinho and was one of the highest goal scorers of the season. However, he has lost his charisma just like his team this season and is trying desperately to get back to form.
Romelu Lukaku from Everton was also in great form for the Toffees last season. He has a great eye for goal and has proven his goal scoring prowess this season so far. In this article, we will try to compare the two strikers and try to establish their effectiveness in front of goal for their respective teams.
Jose Mourinho had the Chelsea team play some excellent football last season as they blew away teams and won the league title with some games to spare. They have however started this season in pathetic fashion and find themselves in the bottom half of the table, 14 matches into the competition. This form has taken its toll on their forward Diego Costa who looks a shadow of his past self this season.
Costa scored 20 goals for Chelsea last season in the Barclays Premier League but has struck just three times in the 11 games he has played for the club. He created 1.58 chances per game in the title-winning season but has created just 1.18 chances per game this season. The Spaniard has not been able to gel with his team well this season and has often worn a lone figure in the final third. His shot accuracy has also gone down from 64% to 53% this season and he needs to work really hard to get back into a scoring streak.
Romelu Lukaku on the other end has been consistent for Everton and Martinez and has been a reliable source of goal scoring opportunities for the Toffees. He scored 10 goals in the Premier League all season and was a major part of Everton’s campaign last season. He has only gotten better this season as he has already equaled his last year’s tally in just 14 games. Lukaku also has a higher shot accuracy rate at 68% this season and has been simply irresistible in front of goal. He has created 15 chances, 2 more than Costa this season and is an integral part of Martinez’ plan at the Goodison Park.
Both strikers have had vastly different seasons just like their clubs and will be trying hard to improve on their present record. Costa has not been as effective as his manger wants him to and there are a number of reasons for it. Fabregas who found Costa every time he had the ball last season has had one of the worst seasons in his stellar career. Hazard has also lost his form and has looked ordinary at times which has not helped the likes of Costa in front of goal. Costa has worked hard every game to try and make something happen, but it has just not gone well for Chelsea this season and neither for Costa.
Lukaku has been fortunate this season more than the last with the amount of creativity in the squad. Gerard Deulofeu, Ross Barkley, Kone and Naismith have all been impressive this season and have no doubt helped the big Belgian in his quest for goals. It would be harsh to compare the two strikers given the difference in the campaign of the two clubs but Lukaku has been in better form in the Premier League this season and if he can keep up his touch of scoring goals, he can become one of the top scorers in the Premier League.
Leave your opinion whether Lukaku is a better option than Diego Costa in their present form.
