Portuguese midfielder William Carvalho has signed a new-deal with Sporting Lisbon which will keep him at the club until 2020. As part of the deal, Carvalho’s release clause, which was rumoured to be set at €37million (£29million), has been bumped up to €45million (£35million) to put off potential suitors.
Arsenal have been linked with a move for William Carvalho for as long as I can remember and with the midfielder signing a new-deal we can put those reports to rest. It had been reported that the 23-year-old was on Arsene Wenger’s January transfer wish-list. Carvalho has himself fuelled Arsenal rumours in the past when he said that he has been “fond of Arsenal”.
Carvalho was the Player of the tournament at European Under-21 Championship last summer and has been linked with some of the top European clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal.
A statement on Sporting’s website read: “Under the terms and for the purposes of compliance with the reporting requirements stemming from Article 248 , paragraph 1 al. a) of the Securities Code, the Board of Directors of Sporting Clube de Portugal – Futebol, SAD announces that the athlete William Carvalho Silva extended his contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal – Futebol SAD until the season 2019/2020, settling the termination clause in €45,000,000.00 (forty- five million euros).”
Carvalho looks pleased to have committed his future to a club where has been since he was 13 “I am very happy for the vote of confidence that Sporting CP have given me once more,’ Carvalho told the club’s official website after agreeing an extended stay.
‘Sportinguistas, I say to you that I am very happy with the deal which I signed up to 2020 and that you will have total effort on my part to be champions.’
