Manchester United have taken Sam Grimshaw of Glossop North End; a non-league side on trial.

A left-back by trade, 21-year-old Grimshaw had been taken on trial by the Red Devils earlier this year, and his stay at the AON Training Complex was further extended in April.

A former Manchester City academy player, Grimshaw has been given an opportunity to earn a permanent contract with the club he idolizes.

Talking to Manchester Evening New, Grimshaw said, “I got a call from my agent saying they wanted to take a look at me”

“It was brilliant news. It is a big opportunity of course with United and I have got to try and take the chance as I have always been a fan of the club.

“They asked me to go in for a one week trial and that was extended until the end of the season.

“Now they want me to go back in July. I cannot wait.”

The move would have seen the full-back travel with United on their summer tour of the United States, but Grimshaw denied reports of him traveling with the squad.

“I am not going on tour as far as I am aware.

“All I know is I am doing a preseason and playing a few games after training with them for five weeks.”

Grimshaw started his career with Manchester City’s academy and has also played for Altrincham and Radcliffe Borough.

The 21-year-old won was the North West Counties League Champions and Cup winners with his current employees Glossop North End, but failed to win a treble after they were outdone by North Shields in the FA Vase final.

And Grimshaw’s imminent future is most likely to be with the Red Devils; with his manager Chris Willcock hoping that the left-back earns his dream move, which would also bolster the club financially.

“Hopefully we can get a few quid for him that can go on the budget, which will be nice.

“He is a young man with really good qualities. He is still learning and being in and around a club of the stature of Manchester United can only help him develop.”

Grimshaw, if his move is made permanent, will become the second summer signing for Manchester United, having already sealed the signing of PSV’s Dutch attacker Memphis Depay.
