Leading newspaper L’Equipe has dropped a big bomb over the fans of the leading football game FIFA by EA Sports.

Lionel Messi who overtook Brazilian star Kaka as the cover face of the popular video game back in 2013 has ever since appeared on all the covers of the game but the newspaper has now speculated that the Argentine may not be on the cover of the 2017 version of the game.

Reports in France suggest that Messi is close to an expiration of his contract with EA Sports and is believed that he might be replaced on the cover by another superstar.

L’Equipe stated that the door is still open for Messi to strike a new deal with the franchise but it is reported that the company are already looking for a replacement.

Messi appears on the FIFA cover either alone or alongside the leading player in the country. In England the franchise had Lionel Messi and Jordan Henderson on the cover and sold 2.5 million copies making the game a best seller in the previous year.

However, this year, with Messi almost ruled out, the search for a new face is on by EA. Team mate Neymar and long term rival Cristiano Ronaldo are both ruled out because of their contracts with rivals Konami for the PES series.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid mid-fielder and Columbian superstar James Rodriguez is the favorite to appear on the cover of the 2017 edition of the game.

Rodriguez has recently fallen down the pecking order at Los Blancos but with the sacking of Benitez, he may get his chance back in the squad under new manager Zinedine Zidane.

This will surely give the player a better chance to land the deal but the question now is if the face on the cover really matters. For some it might, but for others, having the controller in their hand is what matters the most.

Have your say on who should replace Messi on the cover of FIFA 17.
