Liverpool’s Emre Can believes Germany U21s 5-0 defeat against Portugal U21s in the Euros is a ‘dark day’ for the entire country.
Germany U21s were strong favourites to win the Euros U21s, but Rui Jorge’s side won 5-0 in Olomouc. Can believes their performance was a joke, and over confidence did them no good.
“Maybe I thought before the game that I’m the greatest,” Can told Bild.
“I’ve no idea what that was today. I think I need to come back down to earth.
“We are all young people. If you always get praise and then praise, then you think you’re a great man.
“What we played there was just a joke.”
Meanwhile, another Liverpool younster Tiago Ilori is confident the current squad can go one better than the golden generation of Luis Figo and Rui Costa. Ilori missed the game against Germany U21s due to a thigh compaint, but is expected to play against Sweden on Tuesday in their first final for 21 years.
“It was great,” he said. “I couldn’t have asked for better. We’re going to do everything we can and of course we’re confident – we’ve always been confident. But we are humble enough that every team in the group we were in was good and the other group. All the teams in the competitions are good teams, so we’re going to give it our best but we’re always going to respect the other team.”
