Chris Bascombe of The Telegraph, as Liverpool are closing in on a £12 million deal for the former Bayern Munich midfielder. Emre Can joined Bayer Leverkusen from Bayern Munich for £4.4m. Munich have included a buy-back clause in Emre’s contract, but according to Bascombe, that can not be activated until next summer. Recently, German magazine Kicker also confirmed the reds are interested in signing 20 year old defensive midfielder.
The German youngster is dubbed as ‘The new Michael Ballack’, is known for his versatility and has made a great impression this season. He can also play at left back, centre midfield and attacking midfield and played an important role of Leverkusen this season. Rodgers will be hoping to sign the youngster to replace out of favour Lucas Leiva.
Earlier, Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller confirmed the reds interest. He also thinks the deal will be a “lucrative business” for the German club.
“We know of their interest but there is nothing official. Of course Emre has a clause in his contract now. We’re still waiting for a decision. [A €12 million (£10m) return on a €5.5m (£4.5m)] investment would be lucrative business,” Voller told the German newspaper Bild.
“But that is not the sticking point. We are of the opinion that Emre would do well with another year with us. Roger Schmidt has already spoken to him, he is really into the player. I am convinced that Can would be even better with Roger.”
Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers signed a new, long-term contract at Liverpool Football Club, which will keep him at the club till 2018. Rodgers will be hoping to add 5-6 players to his squad, with Liverpool working hard to bring Adam Lallana and Emre Can to Anfield. Loic Remy, Xherdan Shaqiri, Steven Caulker and Dejan Lovren are all in Rodgers’ shopping list.
