English Premier League 2017-18: Round Up – Week 4

After a week off due to the international break, the EPL fever has begun again. There were lots of incidents happened in the fourth week of the EPL 2017/18 season. The brief stories are as follows:

 

  • Total no.of goals scored in week 4 = 28

 

Saturday (09/09/2017)

Manchester City thrashed 10-man Liverpool by 5-0

Manchester City 5 (Sergio Aguero 24′; Gabriel Jesus 45’+6′ & 53′; Leroy Sane 77′ & 90’+1′) – Liverpool 0

Hosts Manchester City outplayed Liverpool in a high-voltage game. Sergio Aguero opened the scoreline for the hosts on 24 minutes.

The scenario got worse for Liverpool when Sadio Mane was directly sent off on 37 minutes after the hosts’ goalie Ederson got a hit on his face through Mane’s boot. Though Mane didn’t make that contact intentionally, that was too dangerous and injurious as Ederson was unable to play anymore and Claudio Bravo replaced him.

In the 9-minute long injury time of the first half, Gabriel Jesus netted twice through headers, but the first one was disallowed due to offside. However, his second goal was allowed as City went to the dressing room at the half-time with a 2-0 lead.

In the early second half, Jesus scored his second goal of the match with a smooth finish which was assisted by Aguero. Later, Jesus’ replacement Leroy Sane netted twice (77’ and 90’+1’) with superb finishes in both cases as Liverpool ended the game with a painful 5-0 defeat.

 

Arsenal clinched their second victory in this season

Arsenal 3 (Danny Welbeck 6′ & 50′; Alexandre Lacazette 27′) – AFC Bournemouth 0

Danny Welbeck’s double and Alexandre Lacazette’s only goal helped Arsenal to clinch an easy victory against AFC Bournemouth.

Welbeck put Arsenal 1-0 ahead on just 6 minutes after he answered with a close-range header from Sead Kolasinac’s cross. Lacazette doubled the lead for the hosts’ Arsenal on 27 minutes through a powerful strike from just outside the box.

On just 5 minutes of the second half, Arsenal had a 3-0 lead through Welbeck’s second finish of the match. After winning in the opening week of the new EPL summer (won by 4-3 against Leicester City), it was Arsenal’s second victory in the ongoing season after two back-to-back defeats.

 

Brighton & Hove Albion clinched their maiden Premier League victory

Brighton & Hove Albion 3 (Pascal Gross 45′ & 48′; Tomer Hemed 63′) – West Bromwich Albion 1 (James Morrison 77′)

New Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion clinched their maiden Premier League victory in their fourth game which was against West Bromwich Albion (WBA).

Pascal Gross produced the first ever Premier League goal for Brighton & Hove Albion on 45 minutes. The host Seagulls got a 2-0 lead in the early second half when Gross sent home with a low long shot from outside the box.

Just after an hour-mark, the hosts took a 3-0 lead after Tomer Hemed (63’) struck with a header from Pascal’s cross.

James Morrison scored the only consolidate goal for the visitors WBA on 77 minutes as the Seagulls clinched their first Premier League victory with a 3-1 margin.

 

Harry Kane’s brace produced a 3-0 victory for the Spurs against the hosts Everton

Everton 0 – Tottenham Hotspur 3 (Harry Kane 28′ & 46′; Christian Eriksen 42′)

A brace from Harry Kane helped Tottenham Hotspur to beat the hosts Everton with a 3-0 scoreline.

Harry Kane scored his first goal of the season on 28 minutes with a stunning long range shot from the right flank. It was also Harry Kane’s 100th overall goal for Spurs, and that came unforgettably.

Eriksen doubled the lead for the Spurs on 42 minutes with an easy finish.

In the very first minute of the second half, Kane scored his second goal of the match after he struck on Ben Davis’ cross.

 

Chelsea snatched a 2-1 away victory against Leicester City

Leicester City 1 (Jamie Verdy 62’ PEN) – Chelsea 2 (Alvaro Morata 41’; N’Golo Kante 50’)

The defending champions Chelsea snatched a 2-1 away victory against the hosts Leicester City.

Alvaro Morata scored with a header on 41 minutes as Chelsea got a 1-0 lead after Azpilicueta generated an excellent cross into the box.

N’Golo Kante extended Chelsea’s lead to 2-0 on just 5 minutes of the second half with a brilliant low strike from 25-yard distance.

The hosts earned a penalty on 62 minutes which was converted to a goal by Jamie Verdy with a firing shot that was failed to stop by Chelsea goalie Thibaut Courtois. However, there was no further damage for Chelsea as they clinched a 2-1 away victory against the 2015/16 EPL champions.

 

Southampton handed their first defeat of the season by undefeated Watford

Southampton 0 – Watford 2 (Abdoulaye Doucoure 38′; Daryl Janmaat 66′)

Southampton was handed their first defeat of this Premier League season after Watford extended their unbeaten run in this season with a 2-0 victory. Visitors Watford opened the account after Abdoulaye Doucoure made a stunning long strike from 20-yard distance.

Substitute Daryl Janmaat doubled the lead for Watford (2-0) on 66 minutes through another long shot from 25-yard distance.

 

Manchester United’s remarkable beginning of the season stumbled with a 2-2 draw against Stoke City

Stoke City 2 (Maxim Choupo-Moting 43′ & 63′) – Manchester United 2 (Marcus Rashford 45’+1′; Romelu Lukaku 57′)

Hosts Stoke City stuck Manchester United’s remarkable beginning of the season with a 2-2 draw.

The Red Devils conceded the first goal of this season on 43 minutes after the hosts’ new signing Maxim Choupo-Moting scored his first Premier League goal that was assisted by Mame Biram Diouf with a cross. Within the 3 minutes, Manchester United equalized the scoreline after Marcus Rashford sent home with a header.

Romelu Lukaku provided the leading goal (2-1) for Manchester United on 57 minutes after he quickly finished a rebounded shot. But, United’s leading not lasted long as Choupo-Moting scored his second goal of the match with a header from the resulting corner.

After three consecutive dominant clean-sheet victories, it was the first point wastage for Manchester United in the ongoing season. However, they are still top on the table.

 

Sunday (10/09/2017)

Chris Wood’s early goal secured three points for Burnley

Crystal Palace’s horrific run continues as they suffered fourth straight defeat in the ongoing EPL season after losing a match against the hosts Burnley.

Chris Wood scored the solitary goal for the hosts in just 3rd minutes after Lee Chung-Young made a blunder through a wrong back-pass that traveled to Wood.

Despite playing a dominant football with creating many chances, Crystal Palace failed to come out from that mistake as the hosts Burnley clinched a 1-0 victory. Crystal Palace is now the only team that has not scored yet in the ongoing EPL season.

 

Jamaal Lascelles scored the winner for Newcastle

Swansea City 0 – Newcastle United 1 (Jamaal Lascelles 76’)

Newcastle United beat the hosts Swansea City by 1-0 in the Sunday’s clash. After a long tight fight, Jamaal Lascelles scored the only goal of the match on 76 minutes through a header from the following corner.

 

Monday (11/09/2017)

Huddersfield’s impressive runs ended as Hammers claimed the first point in the season with a 2-0 victory

West Ham United 2 (Pedro Obiang 72′; Andre Ayew 77′) – Huddersfield Town 0

West Ham United opened their points-table account in the ongoing EPL season after beating Huddersfield Town by 2-0. Making the debut in the Premier League, it was Huddersfield’s first defeat as they were unbeaten in their first three matches (2 won and one is drawn).

Pedro Obiang broke the deadlock for the hosts West Ham United on 72 minutes after his long-range shot took a huge deflection off Zanka that forced to beat the visitors’ goalie Jonas Lossl. It was also the first goal conceded by Huddersfield Town in their Premier League history, as they had also maintained clean-sheets in their first three PL encounters. Also, it was the 100th goal of the EPL 2017/18 season.

Andre Ayew strengthened the lead for the hosts after making 2-0 on 77 minutes with a close range finish from the following corner.

After losing the first three matches in this PL season, it was the first victory for the West Ham United.

  • Critical Week 4 Stats

Manchester City vs. Liverpool – i) Scoring a goal in the game, Sergio Aguero (124 Premier League goals) became the top goal scorer as a non-European player in the Premier League history after surpassing Dwight Yorke (123 Premier League goals).

ii) Since March 1937, it was the first time when Manchester City scored five goals against Liverpool.

 

Everton vs. Tottenham Hotspur – Harry Kane (101 goals) became the 17th Tottenham Hotspur player to score 100+ goals in overall.

 

Leicester City vs. Chelsea – Since 2012, it was the first time when Chelsea clinched an away Premier League victory in September. Before this game, Chelsea had last time secured an away Premier League win in September was on 29th September 2012 against Arsenal by 2-1.

 

Southampton vs. Watford – Since October 2008, it was the first league win for Watford against Southampton.

 

Burnley vs. Crystal Palace – Since 1924/25, Crystal Palace became the first top-flight team to lose first four games without scoring a goal.
