The Red Devils earned their place in the competition after their fifth place finish in the Premier League last season under Louis van Gaal and it’s the first time they have ever featured in the group stage.

United were seeded in Pot 1 for the draw, owing to their UEFA club coefficient, which means that they were certain to avoid a number of big-name teams, such as Internazionale, Fiorentina, Athletic Bilbao, Schalke and Zenit Saint Petersburg.

They had the prospect to face teams from pots 2,3 and 4, with the likes of Standard Liege, Celta Vigo, Nice, Mainz and Feyenoord remained their possible opponents.
