The Champions of last season made a poor start to the 2015-16 season as they only earned 4 points from the first four games. Chelsea’s manager Jose Mourinho did some smart business in the transfer window, but his team has been lethargic at best and it seemed like they are in need of a confidence booster.
This might not be the right time for a trip to the Goodison Park, which is not an easy place to travel. Roberto Martinez’s men have taken 5 points from their 4 games and will be confident heading into the game against Chelsea. They drew against a gritty Tottenham side and will want to play the same way against Mourinho’s men who visit on the back of a defeat. This article is a preview of the match between Everton and Chelsea.
The match between Everton and Chelsea will be played at the Goodison Park on Saturday the 12th of September. The kickoff is scheduled at 12:45 pm BST (5:15 pm IST).
Tom Cleverly who has slowly crept into the squad for Everton will miss this game against Chelsea due to an ankle injury. He is expected to be out for not less than two months. Apart from this, Martinez has some good news as left back Brendan Galloway is fit to start for the club. Aaron Lenon, Ramiro Funes Mori and Leonardo Rodriguez are all available for selection.
The biggest news for the London club has been the injury to Thibaut Courtious who could be out for 10 weeks. He will surely be replaced by Asmir Begovic who had a good start to the season. Skipper John Terry will be available for selection after serving his suspension while Baba Rahman and Loftus Cheek may well find their place in the starting XI.
After a heroic comeback in the league cup against Barnsley, Everton held Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw at the White Hart Lane. Tim Howard was at his best denying everything that was thrown at him by the Tottenham front line. Everton were sound defensively and will want to reproduce the form against a Chelsea side who are short of goals.
Costa, Hazard and Pedro will cause a lot of troubles but Everton will back themselves to see the danger. Lukaku and Naismith were good in patches in the last game but have the quality to produce a moment of brilliance from nowhere. The back line of Chelsea which has been shaky at the most will be tested by the Everton attackers at the Goodison Park.
Chelsea has beaten Everton in 4 out of the last 5 games between the two teams. Though they hold an edge, their start to the season will give the fans from Merseyside enough to charge their team up when they meet Chelsea. It will be a good match between two teams who are tactically sound. Everton may just have the edge due to the home advantage.
Our Prediction: Everton 2-1 Chelsea.
