Fixing in Uganda Continues As Star Duo Suspended By Police Football Club

The game of football has over the years, worked hard to stay away from controversy for most parts as we have rarely seen football players dismissed and sacked for match fixing.

It is a disease that is prominent in the sport of cricket but football has not seen too many occasions where it has been spoiled by such activities.

However, a recent reports has now brought to light a shameful incident in Uganda involving match fixing.

According to a story run by the BBC today, Police Football Club has now sacked two former international stars in connection to match fixing.

Godfrey Kateregga and Saddat Kyambadde are two Uganda internationals who earned a good enough name for themselves in their time. However, they are now sacked by the Police Football Club for reportedly being involved in match fixing.

PFC’s chairman Assan Kasingye revealed that there were a number of players who were investigated but the defensive duo from Namibia were found guilty of the offence.

These players confessed,” said the club’s chairman Assan Kasingye. “Other players also admitted that the pair were always trying to convince them to throw away matches for money.”

According to the reports, Kasingye revealed that there were extensive investigations that were run into the matter before they were dismissed and that it was an important decision for the sport as a whole.

Though the players were not available to comment on their ban, Kasingye went on to explain that the senior players in the squad were responsible for getting the duo caught.

He also felt that it is an issue that can have adverse effects on the game as a whole throughout the world.

Kasingye, who is the Assistant Inspector General of Police and Director of INTERPOL and International Relations in Uganda, continued: “This match fixing by some senior players has been discovered as one of the problems we have been facing.”

“It is not only in our club, but also other clubs in the country,” he added.

It seems to be a growing problem in Uganda with bans like these becoming all the more regular.

Just last month, URA FC an Azam Uganda Premier League side, banned two of its players for a similar offence. Fahad Kawooya and Oscar Agaba were reportedly invested in match fixing on a regular basis and were suspended from their club.

It is not the only other recent incident in Uganda with SC Villa, Uganda’s most successful domestic side, also had to suspend 5 players for a similar offence.

It is a disease that can spoil the entire footballing unit and it is important for the PFC to take due care as to keep the top leagues away from such crap.
