Southampton defender Jose Fonte favours a move to Manchester United to Arsenal before the summer transfer window closes.

The 32-year-old joined Southampton in 2010 and starred in Portugal’s Euro 2016 title success earlier in the summer.

Jose Mourinho is a firm admirer of the defender and would like an experienced centre-back to play alongside Eric Bailly.

The Ivory Coast defender will miss around a month of next season for the Africa Cup of Nations and Mourinho doesn’t want to be left short in defence.

Arsene Wenger is desperate to sign a centre-back this summer and holds an interest in Fonte, who he views as a short-term fix to the Gunners’ injury problems in defence.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Fonte favours a move to Old Trafford over the Emirates and is keen on working with his compatriot Mourinho.

The experienced defender would likely be Mourinho’s final signing of the summer should he manage to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams.

However, Puel, the new manager at Southampton has said that Fonte remains an integral part of the team and is not willing to part with him easily.

When asked whether Fonte would stay, he told recently Sky Sports: “Yes. He is a very important player for the squad and the team.

“It’s fantastic to have two players that are champions of Europe, with Soares. Only we can say that. Jose came back with the squad and it’s important to keep him with a good head and attitude.”

Fonte has made 267 appearances for Southampton since making his debut for the Saints back in 2010. the experienced centre-back showed some impressive performances as Portugal were crowned Euro 2016 champions this summer.

Zenit Saint Petersburg star Ezequiel Garay and Juventus stalwart Leonardo Bonucci are also being eyed by the United manager.
