Jose Mourinho revealed Manchester United will make at least one more summer signing and wants the deal to be completed soon, but he is not ready to confirm yet if Paul Pogba is the player in question.
The Portuguese has urged United to sign his final priority target before the start of the Premier League season.
United are believed to be finalising Pogba’s £100m transfer from Juventus, with the French midfielder currently finishing his holiday in the USA and getting ready to fly to England.
Mourinho’s boys played out a drab goalless draw with Everton in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial at Old Trafford on Wednesday but, afterwards, Mourinho refused to confirm anything other than that Pogba is still a Juventus player.
He said: “We are going to sign one more player, that’s for sure.
“I don’t want to speak about Paul Pogba because he is a Juventus player and I don’t like other managers speaking about my players. I don’t speak about their players.
“But the reality is we are going to sign one more player. The market closes on August 31, so we have plenty of time to do that, but obviously I would like to do it before the Premier League season starts.”
The United boss will take his team to Wembley next for the Community Shield match against Leicester this weekend.
But it remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old will take part in the clash with Leicester on Sunday, August 7.
United are believed to have agreed on personal terms with his agent Mino Raiola three weeks ago.
But according to latest reports the EPL giants hit a stumbling block when Juventus refused to pay half of agent Raiola’s commission and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was not in a mood to budge.
Juve wanted United to pay Raiola, since he has advised Pogba on returning to Manchester, and reports say Woodward could have ‘folded’ in what could be a breakthrough.
Despite the breakthrough, Mourinho has become so frustrated by the delay he is understood to have told Woodward to finish the deal by this week at the latest or move onto Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Manchester United have already roped in Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Mourinho is still looking for a fourth high-value signing ahead of the upcoming season.
The Portuguese boss was initially quite pessimistic about United’s chances of signing Pogba but the club’s discussions with Raiola have been positive over the last two months.
