According to popular Gazzetto dello Sport writer Emanuele Giulianelli as he revealed via his personal twitter handle, Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The well-known Italian journalist revealed Arsenal will complete the signing of Mustafi on Wednesday.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the German international this summer and Giulianelli revealed Arsenal could finally sign him after the La Liga club agreed a €28m (£26m) deal with Arsenal.

He also tweeted that Valencia are delaying the deal in an attempt to get more bids from other clubs.

Mustafi has three years left in his contract at Valencia but the player is open to a move to the Emirates and have been training alone ahead of a potential move to Arsenal.

However, Valencia coach Pako Ayestaran insists the German will not be allowed to join Arsenal this summer.

The Germany international, whose contract contains a €50m (£43m) release clause, has been target for Arsene Wenger since the summer transfer window opened last month

But Ayestaran does not expect that the 24-year-old centre-back to leave Mestalla during the current transfer window.

The former Everton defender’s absence from the Valencia starting line-up against Las Palmas on Monday, despite reports in the Spanish media earlier on Monday suggesting that he would start, fuelled speculation surrounding his future.

Ayestaran, formerly an assistant manager at Liverpool under Rafael Benitez, later claimed Mustafi’s absence was due to a lack of fitness.

Arsenal are also considering West Brom’s Jonny Evans, a three-time Premier League winner with Manchester United, moved to the Hawthorns last summer but the former Manchester United defender would reportedly cost £25m .
