Forget Hummels, Manchester United have made this Premier League defender their key target this summer

  • Manchester United and defensive signings have been discussed in the same sentence for last few seasons. Their quest has now turned their attention towards the highly rated Everton defender John Stones.

Previously, United have had failed attempts to sign Mats Hummels, Sergio Ramos, Aymeric Laporte and Joao Miranda to bring stability at the back. While Nicolas Otamendi’s deal is still being worked out by the Old Trafford club.

Despite all of the names being linked, United have failed to sign any of their defensive targets. All of these players are from a different league and that has been seen as one of the main reasons for United’s failure to sign them.

Considering that, United are prepared to go all out for Everton’s John Stones who is tipped to be one of the all-time great defenders in Premier League. United are prepared to pay as much as £25million to sign the Everton stopper.

United’s efforts to sign Stones could be spurred by Everton’s unwillingness to sell their star men. As per reports, Martinez values Stones more than any other player at Everton.

Martinez even went on to say that, even if United make a bid for 32million (amount that City paid to sign Mangala last summer), it will not be enough to sign the Mersyside defender.

Martinez said: “I think John has got that sort of ‘leader’ character and probably an Everton character.

“Obviously, John is someone we have made a very strong investment in at a very young age.

“For Everton, he’s a vital player going forward, and for the future. That’s something we pride ourselves on – giving youngsters an opportunity. That’s something we will do for someone like John at Everton.”

Manchester United’s quest to sign a top-class defender could be stretched longer than expected. Stones, 21 played 28 games last season and looked an assured figure against the top Premiership strikers.

Signing him would indeed add depth to Van Gaal’s defense next season, however it is yet to be seen if Everton would be tempted to sell their star, who is tipped for greatness.
