John Terry recently revealed that his current contract with Chelsea would not be extended, and his announcement has seen fans file numerous petitions to get their skipper a new deal, citing Branislav Ivanovic’s new contract. However, interim manager Guus Hiddink believes that a deal could still transpire.

The Dutch manager admitted his shock over the announcement from the English defender and claimed that the London club might still open contract talks with him, branding the exit talks as premature. Lauding Terry’s commitment, he said he would expect him to display the undying passion that he had always shown throughout his Chelsea career. However, he only seemed to offer a temporary relief to the protesting supporters as his statement sounded largely vague.

“It was sad from John and he is entitled when his contract is expiring to make up his mind,” the Chelsea manager told a news conference. “On the other hand, there is also, in the club’s eyes, a dialogue, an open door. It was a bit surprising [the announcement] but he’s completely entitled to do so when his contract is expiring.

“There is no specific decision made yet. It’s early and we have to see what’s coming up in the transition of the management. I like very much the way he’s playing and is committed to the team and he will [continue to] be.”.

The former England international joined Chelsea at the age of 15 from West Ham United in 1995 and has made only four shy of 700 competitive appearances for the London club, guiding them to four Premier League titles, one Champions League, one Europa League and 10 domestic trophies in his 18-year career. He is also the Stamford Bridge club’s highest scoring defender at 66 goals in all competitions.

Roman Abramovich’s decision should not come across as surprising as he infamously sanctioned the exit of another club legend in Frank Lampard only two seasons ago, but he may as well offer a new contract to silence the fans, who had seen the club ditch their favourite manager in Jose Mourinho earlier this season.
