Guus Hiddink hails Chelsea players after 2-1 win over Southampton

The reigning champions of England made the trip to the St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face off against Southampton in the Premier League. It was never going to be an easy game on their travels and Chelsea wanted to perform at their best. Guus Hiddink’s side had something to prove and things did not start as per plans. It was the home side who took the lead in the 42nd minute when Shane Long capitalized on a defensive error made by the visitors. The Saints went into the break with a narrow lead though the game was far from over.

After the restart, it was the Blues who looked the better team, though they had to wait for some time for an equalizer. The goal came from Cesc Fabregas in the 75th minute, which made it 1-1 and everything to play for. Further, just when it seemed that the match would end in a draw, it was Branislav Ivanovic who scored a late goal to give his side the lead. A perfect comeback to which Ronald Koeman’s side had to answer and a hard-fought three points for Hiddink and the west London side.

Here is what the Chelsea boss had to say in his post-match interview:

“It’s deserved because we had a great game in big parts of the game. We didn’t start very well, they were dominant in the first 20 minutes, but we took it over.”

“We showed the desire is huge to get results from negative to positive. I love working with the guys, especially when they respond as they did today.”
