Arsenal FC full back Hector Bellerin is set to sign a contract extension with the club in this season. The defender was spotted by Arsene Wenger in 2011 from FC Barcelona’s academy La Masia and was inlcuded in the club’s youth setup. He was promoted to the senior side and was given his Premier League debut in 2013 but was later sent to Watford on loan. He came back to the club last season and after first choice right-back Matheiu Debuchy got injured he was give the notch.
Bellerin took the opportunity with open arms and played exceptional football for the Gunners and won the FA Cup title. Just like ex-Gunner Cesc Fabregas he too had a scope of heading back to the La Liga champions but he denied a return. He was quoted by Telegraph: If I had wanted to play there I would have stayed there in the first place. The fact that I came to Arsenal means that I want to play here.
For me, the job has just started. It was my first season playing for the first team and obviously I am not thinking about going anywhere else. I just want to cement my place in the first team, get more games and hopefully stay a long time.
He further added: I had a really good experience at Barcelona but, at 16, the train came. It was a hard decision but, as soon as the moment Arsenal said they wanted me and I chatted to the boss, saw the training ground, saw where I was going to live, I had it in my mind I was going to come.
I didn’t doubt it. It was hard for the fact I had to leave my family and friends, my country, but I look back now. I’m really happy that I did it. I know the boss is a man who likes to bring up young players. I remember exactly the chat and that was the moment I decided to come.
I knew if I was doing well he would give me the chance and that’s how it was. I’m really pleased he gave me the chances and the trust.
There are a few players trying to get the record off me. I’ve been working hard during the summer and the whole of last season, training the power in my legs and my body. They are probably going to be happy to beat my last record but don’t know I have it in my pocket now.
In the beginning of last season the Barcelona born defender was initially considered as a cover for new recruits Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chamber. Mid way through the season both the defenders succumbed to serious injuries which opened up a window of opportunity for Bellerin to showcase his talent. He played in the Premier League as well as in the Champions League and did wonders for the club.
A comparison of performance between Bellerin, Debuchy and Chambers:
If we compare Bellerin’s season stats to Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers the Spaniard has an edge over Debuchy and Chambers for interceptions. Debuchy has a better blocks stats, but Bellerin overtakes Chambers. For clearances, Debuchy is way ahead of both the players.
Calum Chambers is a versatile player and can play both as a center back as well as a full-back. Hector Bellerin is an out and out right-back whose overlapping qualities are better.
Arsene Wenger should consider Bellerin as a first team player over Mathieu Debuchy as the Spaniard has future ahead. The French defender will turn 30 this month and thus will be past his pinnacle.
