Hope my successor at Bayern will win Champions League: Guardiola

Munich, May 4 (IANS) Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola has said his team will be judged for not winning the Champions League title but he is “proud” of his players and hopes his successor, Carlo Ancelotti, will win the tournament during his tenure.

“We did everything possible. I hope Carlo can achieve it,” the coach said here on Tuesday after his team was eliminated by Atletico Madrid in the semi-final match, reports Efe.

Guardiola failed to reach the Champions League final on all three attempts under the Spanish coach, losing in the semi-finals in all the attempts. He will coach England’s Manchester City next season. He will be replaced by Italian Carlo Ancelotti.

Atletico lost 1-2 against Bayern in the second leg here after winning the first leg 1-0 at their home. They qualified by the double value of the goals scored away from home.

Guardiola insisted repeatedly that he was proud of his “excellent players” and wished the team “the best for the future”.

His sadness was directed mainly towards his players who “don’t deserve to not be in the final,” he said, before adding that “Atletico also deserves it.”

“The statistic is the statistic in football. Of course, I would have wanted to reach the final in each of these three years. I hope now that Carlo will get it,” he said.

He ,however, denied being disappointed, arguing that you can only be disappointed “when they haven’t played well”.

“Today I don’t have that feeling,” he said.
