Stoke City are reportedly interested in signing Manchester United defender Phil Jones on loan after failing in their pursuit to land Mamadou Sakho, according to Daily Mirror.
Stoke manager Mark Hughes has expressed his desire to sign a central defender before the close of the transfer window and have now upped their interest in an attempt to lure him away from Old Trafford.
The 24-year old’s future at Old Trafford remains unclear with Jose Mourinho keen with Daley Blind and Eric Bailly pairing in central defense.
Manchester United are also keen to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte before the close of the transfer window as Mourinho want to add an experienced defender to his squad.
The player is currently after Eric Bailly, Daley Blind, and Chris Smalling in the pecking order and if Mourinho signs Fonte then his playing time would be seriously affected. His career has been hampered by injuries of late as he is still finding a way to break into Manchester United starting line-up after his recovery.
Hughes has earlier confirmed his interest in Jones as he said: “As I said we’ve made enquiries, we’ve talked about a lot of players, too many to list to be perfectly honest.
“Clearly, he’s a player that has got a good pedigree and is at a good club. Sometimes you just enquire to see what the current thinking is on certain players.”
The young defender is keen to move to a new club this summer as he looks to revive his career after his recovery.
