Premier League giants Manchester United have promoted impressive youth team goalkeeper Joel Periera into the senior side, according to ESPN.

Joel Periera, 19 had joined Manchester United from Neuchetal Xamax in 2012 summer transfer window. After a successful trial, the player has announced on his Twitter account that he has now extended his stay.

Pereira has represented Portugal under-17 at the international stage. The custodian was also a part of the United team which had won the Under-21 Premier League title last season.

This is a weird move by United manager Louis van Gaal as the club already have four goalkeepers in their squad. The Red Devils had signed Argentine international Sergio Romero this summer amid rumours that Victor Valdes might leave. But the former Barcelona custodian is yet to move out. Also David De Gea is yet to make a decision over his future.

David De Gea was strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid but the move now looks doubtful.

Even though the young custodian has joined the club it is highly unlikely that he would break into the starting lineup even for a single match. He is likely to continue with the youth teams in this season too.
