Apart from Kamala and Sasmita, Bala Devi Ngangom(2), Ashalata Devi Loitongbam, Oinam Bembem Devi & Irom Prameshwori Devi got their names on to the scoresheet to help India come out victorious in their opening fixture. Sasmita Malika and Kamala Devi completed first half hattricks to help India lead 9-0 at half-time and added 6 more in the second half in their opening Group A match of the 2014 Asian Games.
Sasmita Malik opened the scoring in the 4th minute but Maldives held out resolutely till the 17th minute when the flood games were well and truly opened. Kamala Devi Yumnam scored the second in the 17th minute and Indian women piled on in a rush adding 4 more in the next 8 minutes. Bala Devi Ngangom netted India’s third(19′) and Sasmita Malik completed her hattrick(21’&25′) either side of Kamala Devi’s second(22′) as India cruised to a 6-0 lead after just 25 minutes.
Five minutes later, Kamala Devi completed her own hattrick in just 13 minutes. After a brief lull in scoring, Bala Devi Ngangom and Kamala Devi helped themselves in added on time at the end of first half to take India 9-0 to the good into half-time interval Bala Devi, in addition to her own two goals, was also efficient in finding the right partners as she ran the Maldives defence ragged.
Suprava Samal came on for an injured Tuli Goon at the end of first half and Radharani Devi was brought on for Bala Devi for the second half. Desperate Maldives all pretence of attack and called in 7 defenders to stop India from piling on more misery. Despite the desperate tactics from Maldives, India still had 36 shots, of which 24 were on target. India had 70% of the ball possession and Aditi Chuhan hardly ever touched the ball as Indian women kept plugging away at the Maldives’ back line.
Wing back Ashalatha Dev Loitongbam opened the scoring in the second half(53′) before former captain Oinam Bembem Devi added her name to the scoresheet a couple of minutes later. Kamala Devi and Sasmita Malik helped themselves to another goal apiece to make it 13-0 with 10 minutes to go in regulation time.
Sasmita Malik added her 5th goal the stroke of full-time and India’s other forward Irom Prameshwori Devi helped herself to a goal in added on time to complete a 15-0 rout.
India will take on hosts South Korea in their second Group match on 17th September
