The first week of the ISL is complete and it is Atletico de Kolkata on top of the pile with two impressive victories. The other team to catch the eye was Chennaiyin FC, who overcame a tough away game against FC Goa with all three points.
With so many stars participating in the league, it would be hard to make a best XI for the 1st week but here is the team of the week.
Goalkeeper: Subhasish Ray Chowdhury – Atletico de Kolkata
The Atletico goalkeeper was in fine form in both his appearances, keeping clean sheets against Mumbai City and NorthEast United. Apart from his fine reflexes, he also is confident in plucking balls from the air and is strong in the air also.
Defender: Pavel Cmovs – Mumbai City FC
While Mumbai might have conceded three goals, Cmovs was the one player who can hold his head up high. The Czech defender was brilliant on the ball and broke up many Kolkata attacks; he even had one surging shot brilliantly saved by the Kolkata goalkeeper.
Defender: Mikael Silvestre – Chennaiyin FC
The former France and Manchester United defender held up well in the Chennaiyin FC defense. He managed the other defenders well and was able to hold off a second half charge by FC Goa to lead his team to victory.
Defender: Robin Gurung – NorthEast United FC
Another Indian player to make a mark in the league, the 22 year old has been a rock at the heart of the NorthEast United defense and helped them to a win over the Kerala Blasters. He will hope to bounce back after a tough loss to Atletico de Kolkata.
Defender: Josemi – Atletico de Kolkata
The former Liverpool defender has helped his team keep back to back clean sheets and wins. He does not look off the pace like a lot of the foreign players and it seems that Kolkata has done the right thing by buying the right players, rather than the named players.
Midfielder: Denson – Chennaiyin FC
The holding midfielder was playing on another level against FC Goa. He kept the ball rolling for his team and was willing to do the dirty work to break up any attack from the opposition, one of the star Indian performers from this week.
Midfielder: Borja Fernandez – Atletico de Kolkata
With Atletico de Kolkata doing so well, it should not be a surprise to find so many of their players in this list. The former Real Madrid man has been excellent in midfield for the Kolkata side and capped off a fine performance with a sublime goal against Mumbai City.
Midfielder: Elano Blumer – Chennaiyin FC
The former Manchester City player lit up the stadium with a trademark free kick which helped Chennaiyin FC overcome FC Goa with the first ever away victory in the ISL. Elano looked like he was still playing for City and the Chennai fans would be incredibly impressed with him.
Forward : Luis Garcia – Atletico de Kolkata
Technically playing as a midfielder, Luis Garcia has been given a free role in the Atletico de Kolkata team and he has done justice to that. He seems to be really in a league of his own, slaloming past players and providing flicks and tricks for his team mates to set them up, certainly the best marquee signing of the league, so far.
Forward : Fikru Teferra – Atletico de Kolkata
The lanky forward may not the fastest runner or the player who is going to work his socks off but he does have a finish. The Ethiopian scored the first goal of the ISL against Mumbai and scored a blinder against NorthEast United, he also assisted for Atletico’s third goal against Mumbai.
Forward: Mads Junker – Delhi Dynamos
The match might have ended as a drab 0-0 affair between the Dynamos and Pune FC but the Delhi forward seemed to be the only player who might have broken the deadlock. He was only denied, multiple times by Pune goalkeeper Belardi, otherwise Mads would have been celebrating a goal for sure.
