Irish football skipper Keane to retire

Dublin, Aug 25 (IANS) Ireland captain Robbie Keane has announced he will retire from international football after a friendly match with Oman on August 31 here at the Avaya Stadium.

The 36-year-old Keane made his senior international debut back in 1998. He played at the 2002 World Cup and the Euro in 2012 and 2016, reports Xinhua.

Keane has played for Ireland 145 times over a span of 18 years, with a record 67 goals to make him his country’s leading goal scorer.

The Irish player joined the American side Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011. While announcing his international retirement, he showed his intention to play for the Galaxy for several more seasons.

“I love my time playing with LA Galaxy and intend to focus my energies on continuing my club football for a few more seasons,” Keane wrote in a statement on Wednesday.
