Branislav Ivanovic has signed a contract extension with Chelsea this week. He was expected to do so with Chelsea offering their customary one year deal to the veteran, as is the case with all the players at Chelsea who are past the age of 30. Fellow defender John Terry is also expected to be given a deal in the coming weeks as it would complete the extension of Chelsea’s captain as well as the vice-captain.
With Chelsea struggling in the league and a major reason of it being the Serbian’s form, it might come as insult to injury for the Chelsea fans who have repeatedly berated Ivanovic on the pitch where he continues to let a winger after another just pass him with ease.
His fall from grace can be clearly seen when we compare the number of goals conceded by either flanks from Chelsea. Azpilicueta simply shuts his wing down and hasn’t let in a goal from that side since the brilliant goal from Riyad Mahrez in Jose Mourinho’s last match in charge at Chelsea.
Ivanovic, meanwhile, has been letting in goals, crosses and whatnot against lowly opposition over the season. The last match against Everton was a prime example as two goals were a direct result of his failure to track his winger.
Even though the fans are surprised, the player isn’t, as he was assured an extension by the owner at Chelsea, Roman Abramovic himself over the last couple of weeks and only the minor details were to be sorted out.
