Manchester United were well aware of the short comings of their new manager Jose Mourinho after his antics in more than one country has seen him labeled as one of the most controversial managers in world football.
However, his success in terms of trophies makes him one of the most successful as well, a quality that attracted the Manchester outfit.
But Jose Mourinho seems to have gotten himself into yet another controversy this time from a financial angle.
Recent reports have revealed that an MP has called for an investigation into Mourinho’s financial affairs claiming that he has moved millions of pounds off shore to avoid paying taxes. The report has suggested that the manager’s advisors helped him move large amounts to Switzerland and British Virgin Islands on the earnings from the use of his image rights for product endorsement.
However, the manager has now dismissed the idea that he was trying to evade taxes and recently revealed that he has filed all the required documents and that he has nothing to hide.
Speaking to the media after the draw against Everton at the weekend, Mourinho went on to say that these allegations were baseless.
“I have lodged the documents in Italy, Spain and England,” he said. “I have nothing to hide. They prove that I have done nothing wrong.”
An agency representing the manager has also strongly denied any claims of tax fraud and has jumped into his defense along with Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo, who is also accused of a similar fraud.
The agency also released a statement in wake of these allegations and strongly refuted any claims made by the MP.
“Both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho are fully compliant with their tax obligations with the Spanish and British tax authorities,” said Gestifute, the agency, in a statement.
They went on to say that neither of them were ever involved in any such activity and that further allegations will be legally reported to the authorities.
“Neither Cristiano Ronaldo nor Jose Mourinho have ever been involved in legal proceedings regarding the commission of a tax offence,” the statement said.
“Any insinuation or accusation made to Cristiano Ronaldo or Jose Mourinho over the commission of a tax offence will be reported to the legal authorities and prosecuted,” it added.
However, MP Meg Hillier felt that it was a very difficult situation and wanted the tax authorities to look into the claims.
“These revelations are extraordinary and warrant a close examination by the UK tax authorities,” she said.
Further probe into the matter might reveal something dark but for now, Mourinho seems to have escaped this situation rather easily.
